Beyond ATC · Fire and rescue

An apparatus instead of a sector, crewed against the same kind of qualification

SkyRoster has never rostered a fire crew. Everything on this page is a mapping exercise against the product's own architecture, stated here in the open, not a description of a deployment. Fire and rescue trades the ATC rhythm of shorter rotating shifts for a twenty-four or forty-eight-hour watch system, but the underlying question, who is certified for which seat on which unit right now, is the same question the competency model was built to answer.

The scheduling problem

What watch scheduling actually has to hold

Coverage shape

Twenty-four-hour or forty-eight-hour watches with days off between them, an entirely different rhythm from a three-shift rotation, but still a fixed, published pattern.

Qualifications

A base firefighter qualification plus stacked specialist certifications, hazardous materials, technical rescue, paramedic. Each carries its own currency and its own periodic recertification.

Statutory rest

Duty-length and rest rules for shift-based emergency services vary by country and by collective agreement. No specific limit is stated here.

Demand pattern

Minimum crew per apparatus sits close to a hard floor. A department rarely tolerates running an engine below its minimum crew the way an office tolerates being one desk short.

What maps directly

Mechanisms already built for a different name

Every item below is an illustrative mapping against SkyRoster's existing data model.modelled None of it has been configured for a fire service, and none of it has been proven on a real watch.

An apparatus seat as a working position

Officer, driver, firefighter, paramedic, each a working position requiring its own qualification, with stacked specialist certifications sitting underneath as requirements with their own currency, exactly as a controller's rating sits on top of a medical check. See /platform/competency.

Minimum crew as a manpower requirement

How many people, in which roles, on which apparatus, per watch, is the same headcount-by-time-by-place table sector planning already builds for airspace and working positions. See /platform/sector-planning.

A probationary firefighter as a support period

A recruit working under a field training officer maps onto the same support-period mechanism built for a controller under a mentor: excluded from independent assignment on that qualification until the training window closes. See /platform/competency.

Trading a watch, re-verified

Swapping a shift is common practice in career fire services. The same automatic check that already re-verifies a controller's swap, qualification current, rest intact, would apply to a Kelly-day trade without change. See /platform/shift-swaps.

A tolerated shortfall, not a silent one

The tolerance for taking a unit out of service during a genuine shortage is the same shape as the tactical threshold table already built to state the shortfall an ATC unit will tolerate rather than pretend it can always reach full strength. See /platform/tactical-rostering.

A hazmat endorsement that lapses through non-renewal

modelled
The shape
An engine company on a twenty-four-hour watch, where one crew seat requires a hazardous- materials endorsement, and the firefighter holding it has just let its recertification lapse.
What it shows
The same expiry mechanism applies without modification: the moment the endorsement lapses, that firefighter is no longer a candidate for the hazmat seat, department-wide, not just on the watch someone happens to be reviewing.
What it does not show
It says nothing about whether the department has a second hazmat-qualified firefighter available to fill the seat. That is a staffing-depth question, not a rostering one.

What would need new rules or new work

Where the honest answer is development, not a settings screen

Apparatus-level crew composition

A rule requiring one officer, one driver and two firefighters together on one unit reasons about a group of assignments as a set, not about any one assignment's own qualification. That is the same new rule shape healthcare's skill-mix ratio would need, and it does not exist in today's catalogue.

Seniority-based shift bidding

Many career departments allocate shifts and vacation by seniority rather than a scored fairness table. That is a different allocation logic from today's vacation-score mechanism, not a weight adjustment on it.

Incident-driven recall

Fast, ranked recall of off-duty staff for a major incident is a different workflow from a planned swap or a leave request. Nothing in the product today models a call-back cascade.

Bring your crewing minimums, not just your headcount.

A working session with your own apparatus roster and certification list shows exactly which of this page's mappings hold, and which of the open questions above would actually need building first.
