Rule catalogue · Rest and recovery
Breaking it accepts an exchange leaving one of the two people with less rest before their next duty than the rules allow.

Fatigue is cumulative and it does not respect a roster's tidiness. These rules hold the gaps open: the minimum interval between the end of one duty and the start of the next, the longer recovery a night duty earns, and the whole days off that have to survive contact with a staffing shortfall. They are the rules most often quietly eroded when a unit is short of people, which is exactly why a system should enforce them rather than leaving them to the planner's conscience at four in the afternoon.
