A spell on position lasts a worthwhile minimum

Breaking it puts somebody on a position for a spell shorter than the minimum the unit set, so handovers multiply.

What shift patterns rules protect

Many units roster on a repeating pattern, and the pattern itself encodes decades of accumulated practice about what sequences are survivable. These rules keep a generated roster inside the shape the unit actually works, including the direction of rotation, which affects fatigue more than most people outside operations expect. Where a unit rosters without a pattern, this family is largely switched off, which is itself a configuration choice.
